Right in the scenic Dublin Mountains, Johnny Fox’s Pub is a destination that serves history, entertainment, and beautiful meals with the pleasure of spectacular views. A Brief History of Johnny Fox’s Pub Established in 1798, Johnny Fox’s Pub was initailly a humble watering hole for local farmers but became a gathering spot for rebels during the Irish War of Independence. The pub’s history is proudly displayed throughout its rustic interior, which is part museum, part cosy hangout. From old farm tools to antique photographs, the décor takes you to a time when pints and politics went hand in hand. While very popular with tourists —it’s a pub that wears its age and heritage with pride. What Makes Johnny Fox’s Pub Famous? The “Highest” Pub in Ireland Johnny Fox’s Pub boasts the unique title of being one of the highest pubs in Ireland. Don't worry we are not talking about the Alps here! While the altitude won’t leave you gasping for air, it does provide a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside. It’s a great backdrop for a pint of Guinness or a bite to eat. The Hooley Nights If you’ve ever wondered what a true Irish party looks like, book yourself into one of Johnny Fox’s Hooley Nights. These events are a whirlwind of traditional Irish music, dancing, and Irish craic. The performers don’t just play instruments—they bring the house down with their energy and charm. Even the most rhythmically challenged visitors might find their toes tapping by the end of the night. Celebrity Visitors Over the years, Johnny Fox’s has seen its fair share of celebrity visitors. Bono has stopped by, presumably to enjoy the craic away from the stadium spotlight. Hollywood royalty like Julia Roberts and Pierce Brosnan have also graced its halls. The pub’s attraction lies in its authenticity—it’s not hard to see why it draws such a diverse crowd. What’s on the Menu? Johnny Fox’s takes its food seriously, offering traditional Irish food that complements the pub’s old-world charm. The seafood chowder is a must-try, packed with fresh fish and served with homemade brown bread. The traditional Irish stew is another favorite, a mix of tender lamb, potatoes, and root vegetables. If you’re after something lighter, the smoked salmon platter offers a taste of fresh local produce. For those who want a real feast, there’s no shortage of options. Expect dishes that are simple, satisfying, and unpretentious. Getting to Johnny Fox’s Pub Johnny Fox’s is about 25 kilometers south of Dublin city center, nestled in Glencullen. If you’re driving, it’s a scenic 40-minute trip with plenty of Instagram-worthy views along the way. Don’t feel like driving? Several tour operators include Johnny Fox’s in their itineraries, making it easy to combine a visit with a day of exploring the Dublin Mountains. Public transport is also an option, but it’s less direct. Your best bet is to take the LUAS (tram) to Brides Glen and hop on a local bus or taxi from there. The pub also runs a shuttle service. The Atmosphere Going into Johnny Fox’s feels like stepping back in time, but with a modern twist. There’s a warm, lived-in feel to the place, with mismatched furniture, roaring fireplaces, and enough bric-a-brac to keep you entertained. The staff are friendly without being overbearing, and the regulars give it a grounded feeling. Whether you’re a solo traveler or part of a group, you’ll feel right welcome here. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over a pint, listen to some music, and lose track of time. Why Visit Johnny Fox’s Pub? Johnny Fox’s is a great experience.
