The History of the Cobblestone Pub The Cobblestone Pub is a vital part of the city’s cultural fabric. Located in Smithfield, an area with a history as rich and complex as Dublin itself, the pub has long been a gathering place for locals, musicians, and travelers. From Family-Owned to Cultural Landmark Early Origins: The Cobblestone’s story begins with the Mulligan family, who have been in the pub business for over five generations. The current establishment has been under the ownership of the Mulligans since the early 1990s, but the building itself dates back much further. Smithfield’s Transformation: The Cobblestone is located in Smithfield, an area with a history as colorful as Dublin itself. Smithfield Square, originally a marketplace dating back to the 17th century, was a hub for cattle trading and later became known for its vibrant horse fairs. Over the centuries, Smithfield has transformed into a lively cultural quarter, A Musician’s Haven: While many pubs claim to host traditional music, the Cobblestone truly lives up to this promise. It has long been a spot for musicians who play Irish music as it was meant to be played. Why is the Cobblestone Pub Famous? The Cobblestone’s reputation extends beyond Dublin. Known as “a drinking pub with a music problem,” it’s known for its traditional Irish music sessions, which are held every night of the week. Traditional Music Sessions Every Night is Music Night: Unlike other pubs that might feature the occasional live band, the Cobblestone offers live traditional music every single night. Walk in on any given evening, and you’re likely to hear a mix of fiddles, tin whistles, bodhráns, and more, all playing the tunes that have been passed down through generations. Open to All: One of the most unique aspects of the Cobblestone’s music sessions is their openness. While many of the musicians are highly skilled, the sessions are informal, and anyone who knows the tunes is welcome to join in. What to Expect When You Visit Rustic and Cosy: The Cobblestone is the kind of place where time seems to slow down. The interior is rustic and cosy, with wooden floors, exposed brick, and low ceilings that give it a distinctly old-world feel. The walls are full of photographs and memorabilia that pay tribute to Ireland’s musical history. No Frills: Don’t expect flashy décor or modern amenities here. The Cobblestone is a no-frills pub, where the focus is squarely on the music and the community. A Diverse Crowd: The Cobblestone attracts a diverse crowd, from young students and tourists to seasoned locals who have been coming here for decades. The Drinks A Proper Pint: Of course, no visit to an Irish pub would be complete without a pint of the black stuff. The Cobblestone serves a proper pint of Guinness. If stout isn’t your thing, they also offer plenty of other beers, ciders, and spirits. Whiskey Galore: The Cobblestone boasts a good selection of Irish whiskeys, perfect for sipping while you enjoy the music. The Location Smithfield Square: The Cobblestone is located at 77 North King Street, right on the edge of Smithfield Square. This historic square has seen a lot of change over the years, but the Cobblestone has remained a constant, offering a glimpse of old Dublin amid the modern developments. Accessibility: The pub is easily accessible from the city center, making it a convenient stop for tourists. It’s just a short walk from the LUAS (Dublin’s light rail system) Smithfield stop, and there are plenty of buses that run nearby. Frequently Asked Questions Is the Cobblestone Pub Closing? As of the latest updates, the Cobblestone has faced threats of closure due to development plans in the Smithfield area, which have sparked significant public disquiet. However, the pub remains open, and its supporters continue to fight to preserve this cultural landmark. Can You Bring Children to the Cobblestone? While the Cobblestone is primarily an adult environment, children are welcome during the day, especially if they’re interested in music. Are There Food Options at the Cobblestone? The Cobblestone doesn’t have a kitchen, so food options are limited. However, there are plenty of nearby places in Smithfield where you can grab a bite before or after your visit. A Cultural Lifeline Preserving Tradition: The pub plays a crucial role in preserving Irish music and culture. By offering a space where musicians can play, teach, and learn, the Cobblestone ensures that traditional Irish music remains vibrant and relevant. Community Hub: The Cobblestone is a community hub where people come together to celebrate Irish culture. Whether it’s through music, storytelling, or simply sharing a pint, the pub has a sense of belonging that’s part of what an Irish pub does. A Tourist Magnet: For tourists, the Cobblestone offers an authentic experience that goes beyond the typical tourist traps. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in Irish culture. If you’re planning a trip to Dublin, the Cobblestone Pub should be on your list of things to do, especially if you are interested in Irish pub culture. With its history, music scene, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s no wonder that this pub is a big hit with tourists and Dubliners as well. In the words of the regulars, “There’s no place like the Cobblestone.” If in the area, the Guinness Storehouse is close by, as well as the National Museum of Ireland-Decorative Arts & History.
