Dublin Zoo yesterday bid farewell to Betty, a 62-year-old chimpanzee and their oldest resident. Due to age-related health issues, the decision was made to euthanise her to prevent further discomfort.
Helen Clarke-Bennett, a Dublin Zoo team leader, shared her memories of Betty, who arrived in 1964. Known for her strong personality, Betty was a significant figure at the zoo, witnessing its evolution over decades.
Life and Legacy:
Betty experienced various changes at the zoo, from the old “Chimp Tea Parties” to modern enclosures that mimicked natural habitats. Her interactions with other chimps, especially Wendy, marked her as a pivotal member of the troop. Despite health issues in her later years, Betty continued to engage actively with her companions as best she could.
Final Years:
Betty’s last years were spent in a quiet environment within the zoo, accompanied by Austin and Bossou. Her health further declined recently due to chronic arthritis and kidney issues, leading to the humane decision to euthanize her.
