Kellie Harrington made history tonight as she defeated former world champion Wenlu Yang of China to become a two time Olympic Champion in the lightweight boxing divison.

The Dubliner who has enjoyed huge support from across Ireland, has now made history to become the only ever Irish female athelete to win consecutive Olympic gold medals. There was a massive support for her in the Roland Garros stadium as she came out to the classic Cranberries song ‘Zombie’.

In the first round both boxers sized each other out but Kellie took the round using a Southpaw position and her excellent boxing intelligence. The second round saw Kellie build on the first, using great footwork and her jab to take the round again. Yang landed some shots but a couple of big punches from Kellie helped seal the round. In the third Kellie finished out the fight to became a gold medalist again on a split decision.

Afterwards Kellie announced that is was likely her last top level fight, and who would blame her!
